I tried George L's original pole pickup and found it a little soft on the high end. My black Legrande without an amp has a softer sound on strings 4, 5, and 6 than the mahogany Legrande, so my 16ks gave it a more natural reproduction than the 20ks but didn't have the bite I'm used to. I took 17.5ks out of the Blade and put them in the Legrande and it's more to my liking. My experience with pickups is that at any winding, the fundamental sound of the steel is constant. From there, the pickup only adds its characteristics (bright or dark) to the fundamental sound. My best suggestion is to get down to the fundamentals (without an amp) and play your guitar next to one that has a sound you like. If the guitars are comparable, then the 16.5 to 17.5 k range should suit you. If yours is dull or lifeless by comparison, no pickup will ever change it.
