tips for finger picks?

Having played lap steel a few years, I just got used to play without finger/thumb-picks. Now, having bought my first pedal steel (Sho-Bud Crossover)... the string spacing is too tight to play without them. Any advice for getting used to playing with the things? Plus, out of curiosity, why did Sho-Bud stop making crossover models? Thanks, and I love your work...
