Stainless steel seems to be the norm and is hard to beat. I have a book somewhere with expansion/contraction tolerances for metals but can't find it at this time. I remember titanium being high on the list, but expensive. I'm not sure whether it would make enough difference to merit the expense, but titanium rods on pedals A and B is something I'd like to try for curiosity's sake.
