Either way is a matter of preference and no more difficult to learn than the other. Some prefer the high G because of the high G inversion it gives the C6 chord. Others like the D because it makes it easier to play single note lines as well as adding a 13th interval to pedal 6 and a high root note for pedal 5. It wouldn't be difficult to transpose or switch from one tuning to the other, but whatever you learned involving the first string on either tuning would be gone.
