I like what you said about the friendly nature of the competition and him trying to get a lot out of you. It goes without saying that his playing was stellar, but one problem I sometimes have with his playing is that there is no "air" between the notes, so the phrasing is lost in a flurry, like a sentence with no punctuation. But it doesn't appear that the competitive environment prompted you to forget your phrasing!
