Thank you Dermot. If what you have is an older pickup, the pole pieces will tell you if it's a humbucker or not. If there are only one row of magnets then it's probably a single coil that has been wound to a higher impedance. The most obvious distinction between most humbuckers and a stock pickup is that the humbucker will have two rows of magnets side by side.
